Otavalo - Otavalo, Ecuador

Jump to the full entry & travel map Otavalo, Ecuador From Quito we got a bus about 2.5 hours North to Otavalo which is a really nice town famous for its incredible Saturday market which takes up all the streets with sections for fruit and livestock as well as hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of brightly coloured things that we wish we had space in our bags for.  We arrived yesterday at about lunch time and had a look around the market then as we´d heard that though there is

I’m taking the ‘100 things’ challenge

I’m sure you’ve heard of it already. If not, a bunch of people have vowed to give up everything in their life except for 100 “things” (loosely defined). This isn’t a new idea, Leo from Zen Habits talked about it almost a year ago and it’s been circulating around the web in blogs and forums before that (but thank goodness we have TIME around to popularize it). I started cataloging all the items I have around the house and was quite surprised; I think you would be, too. But first, here are some

What I have done this weekend. A photo essay

I have built and arranged in my room a bed, a dresser, and two bookcases. There was an original plan. It was a good plan. I measured everything repeatedly and bought the furniture. The bookcases are about .5 inches too big for the space, since Ikea gives the width of the shelves, and not the width of the bookcase. (and also because there is an enormous running board. So, there became a revised plan: It may even be a better plan, it’s hard to tell at the moment. http://flickr.com/phot

Clothing - It’s a Good Thing We went to the beach to spend time with family and it was insane. INSANE I TELL YOU!! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT go to the beach on the 4th of July! At least, not a Southern California beach. There were so many people camped out that you couldn’t find a way to get from the road down to the water’s edge. It was stressful for me and for the kids. And, may I just take this moment to say that I completely understand the whole “love the skin you’re in” concept. I’m down wit

Balance the look of the body with skirts that are knee length or longer

Balance the look of the body with skirts that are knee length or longer. For some women black clothes save them for special events, those long mornings standing in front of the closet deciding what to wear and from the battle of the bulge. We see a lot of misinformation about what clothing a plus size woman should wear. And Procter & Gamble Co., WalMart Stores Inc.

We crack ourselves up

So this afternoon, I was making hot dogs for lunch. I asked everyone what fixings they wanted on theirs. Lucas said that he wanted ketchup, and then I said, “We have relish, too. Would you like some relish?” I’d bought some for our Fourth of July cookout last weekend. Lucas excitedly replied, “Yes!” So I searched and searched in the fridge but just couldn’t find the jar of relish anywhere. Frustrated, I said, “How do you lose relish?” And my witty husband replied, “With gusto.” LOL! :) Along t

Alien invaders… NOT!

I wasn’t going to pay attention to the latest dubious “Mescans attacking Ammurica” stories… you know, the kind with headlines like “Mexican Military Raiding The Homes of Phoenix Police Officers” or the slightly more alarming that the variant “Mexican Cartel Zetas Attack and kill an American in Phoenix“.  Coming as they do from not very reliable sources, I was surprised to see the alarmist (but semi-reliable) Stratfor Terrorism Intelligence Report riffing off this supposed event. Not that the

UK’s Association of Chief Police Officers Submit to Islam - Want “Sniffer” Dogs to Wear Booties when Dealing with Muslims

H/T - TNR Sniffer dogs to wear ‘Muslim’ bootees Stuart MacDonald - TimesOnline.co.uk Police sniffer dogs will have to wear bootees when searching the homes of Muslims so as not to cause offence.
